Can a 120w speaker be used with a 40w Guitar amp?
I'm wanting to outfit a combo amp (a marshall haze 40) i have with a 120w speaker so it can be used as a 1x12 practice cab for my Bugera 333xl head. I'd like to be able to keep the combo usable for situations where i just need to pick up the amp and go for say going to a lesson or something like that.
---The question is, will the amp in the haze 40 be able to play through a 120w speaker, or is that to little power and too much speaker?
Yes. The wattage rating of a speaker is how much power the speaker can handle. The wattage rating on an amp is how much power it puts out. If the speaker can't handle the power of the amp, then you'll blow the speaker. That speaker can handle that amp 3 times over.
Of course, the sound of a speaker getting pushed to the limit is really desirable when talking about guitar tones. That's why speakers like that Texas Heat aren't that popular. They're built to handle too much power and you don't ever get that awesome speaker break-up that you get with lower rated speakers.
