I'm looking to buy a guitar amplifier, what kind of amp suits best for my playing style?
I'm wanting to spend around 1k on this amp, and i play mainly alternative/hardcore/metal music. I also want this amp to be a bit of a multi-tasking one where it can be useful in the studio along with live sound. I was considering a pevey tube amp?
Peavey makes a pretty damn good tube amp, but for $1000 you can get some really nice amps. When you say studio and live of course the first thing that comes to mind is power. You don't want to use a 100 watt stack in the studio or a 5 Watt Amp live so you have to find a happy medium. I mainly play an Orange Dual Terror because it is so versatile. The head is $859 and an Orange 1x12 cabinet is about $400 so it will be a little over what you want to spend. It is a great amp though since it gives you the option of 7.5, 15 or 30 watts as well as running on 2 or 4 tubes. With the gain adjustments on both channels you can get an over-driven sound even at low studio volumes and the clean sound is quite good also. The Bogner Alchemist is another pretty good option. Personally I would not get a Peavey Valve King 100 Watt Amp though. Nobody needs 100 watts. If you understand how tubes work then you'll know you can never crank 100 watts enough to properly saturate the tubes. Not unless you're playing a huge concert for tens of thousands of people. Also check out some of the Mesa Boogie Combo amps. Many of them have switchable power. The Mark V is a very versatile amp but close to $2000. If I were buying a Peavey I'd opt for either the 60 watt 6505 or the 50 watt Valve King.
