What does it mean when an airliner adds "heavy" to their flight number?
Aircraft with a max weight of 300,000 lb (136,000 kg) or more are classified as 'heavy'. Also, aircraft below that weight, but with strong wake vortex characteristics may be moved into the 'heavy' category.
It is to highlight to controllers and pilots that additional spacing is required, mainly on final approach, to prevent excessive turbulence to following (smaller) aircraft.
