Line Watt Combo Amp
How much do pickups change the sound of an Electric Guitar? Performing Arts?

I have an Epiphone Les Paul standard, I guess not the best stock pickups in it. If I changed each of the 2 to EMGs, 81s or 85s, like kirk hammett, would it dramatically change the tone or just a little? i play rock and heavy metal. i have a line 6 75 watt combo amp. i don't want to waste $200.

Buster very eloquently summed it up. Me...I would tell you that you can't polish a turd!

The stock pickups on most Epi's are OK. Not great, but OK.

EMG's are very popular amoung the metal players around here. Personally, I find them a little to nasal in tone, but to each his own.

How much difference will it make? If you play on the Insane model with the drive cranked all the way up, probably not much. You're pretty much putting out white noise at that point. If you're a little more restrained than that with your distortion, then you'll hear more of a difference.

But then, you have to ask yourself if it's worth putting $200 into your guitar. If you have one of the more inexpensive Epi LP's, then probably not. I read a posting from a guy here a few weeks ago bragging how he had taken a Fender Squire (or something like that) and changed out everything and that he could sell it for $1000 now. Newsflash...no professional guitarist I know is going to pay a grand for a guitar that started out life as a $200 import.

Bottom line...if you really love the guitar and don't care about the resale value, then go for it. But maybe, just maybe, you should think about putting that money against a guitar with better wood, construction, and hardware.

Good luck.

Greetings from Austin, TX

Ken
