Peavey Valveking 112, or Fender Frontman 212R?
Hello, I am a freshman in HS looking for my First Amp. I have been playing acoustic for about a year, and am planning on getting a MIM Fender Strat to go along with the amp choice. While I was browsing guitar amps, I really liked these two. The Peavey is a 50 Watt Tube Amp priced at $420 and the Fender Frontman is a Solid State 100W priced at $330. I am going to be playing blues guitar. I understand that a Tube amp is better for blues, but is it worth $100 extra? Thanks!
YES.
Although in general I prefer an amp with two speakers or more instead of one, if you're playing solo or don't need a ton of volume, then yeah, the Valveking would be the far better sounding amp.
One of the nicest things about a tube amp (besides the fact that it is a tube amp), is that you can swap out the tubes to get different flavors and tones. For instance, putting some nice spiralwound JJ's in the preamp would darken up the tone a little bit and give you higher gain with less noise. Putting a 12at7 or similar *lower* gain compatible tube in there would lower your distortion and give you more clean headroom for a more sparkly, chime-y tone.
And of course you can't forget the Power Amp tubes. I think the Valvekings come with 6L6's? Whichever. 6L6's have a smoother, wider-range response with more bass, while EL34's have less bass, more mids, and some really nice treble tones (a very "Marshall"/British sound). If you do end up thinking about swapping out power tubes, talk to an amp tech first to make sure you can get it rebiased correctly.
Tube amps are also louder (often MUCH louder) than solid state amps.... I would expect that 50 Watt Amp to be louder than the 2x12, probably much louder. Don't forget that you could even swap out the speaker if you wanted for a different tonal response or potentially more volume.... or less wattage for more speaker breakup (but less volume)... there are a LOT more options available for you if you go tube, is what I'm trying to say.
Saul
