What is a stereo power amplifier?
i am looking online for stereo receivers and i keep coming across these stereo power amplifier and i have no idea waht they are.
what are they?
they have some outrageous numbers like 1200 watts and i dont know what that is suppose to mean
what does it mean they amplify audio?
like does it have a connection that i could plug my laptop into or something into and get music to play through the speakers?
The power amplifier is the engine. If you get in your car and push down the gas pedal it will not move if there is no engine. It's not the gas pedal that makes the car go, it's the engine that makes it go. The gas pedal is the information to tell the engine to go and how fast to go.
Your Mp3 player or CD player or what ever player is information. Your preamplifier has a volume control that is something like the gas pedal to tell the engine (amplifier) how loud to play the information coming from the player. Without the amplifier the speakers have no engine to make them go or play.
A typical receiver includes a tuner for AM/FM radio reception, a preamplifier which includes a volume control and source selection (CD, DVD, tape,...) and a power amplifier. For most people an all in one package receiver is just fine. This is the simplest way to go and is adequate for most people. For more advanced systems separating the components has some advantages in versatility and in quality.
Most receivers power ratings are based on one or two channels driven whereas most separate amplifiers are based on all channels driven. A typical 5.1 receiver rated for 100 watts x 5 can only do 100 watts to one channel at a time and closer to 30 ~ 40 watts per channel with all five playing. A typical separate 5 ch amplifier rated for 100 w/ch should be able to do 100 w/ch with all five channels played at the same time.
The best speakers use EQ to remove driver resonance issues, correct for baffle diffractions and other issues. They also separate low, mid and high frequency prior to the amplifier where it can be done based on the linear resistive impedance of an amplifier input as opposed to the dynamic reactive impedance curve of the loudspeaker. This requires a connection point between the preamplifier and power amplifier thus precluding the use of a receiver unless the receiver has "preamp loops" which is almost non existent today. For this type system a receiver simply can not be used, there is no way to connect it!
Most commercially built loudspeakers are designed to work just fine with a receiver. It is a compromise in sound quality but can still be good enough for most people. Even speakers costing more than a nice house are built this way so there are plenty of speaker options that will work just fine with a receiver.
