NOOB(TUBE) AMP QUESTION?
I have an old Heathkit tube amplifier that I converted into an instrument amp. I just changed all the in/out plugs into 1/4" jacks.
I have hooked the outputs directly to the tabs on a 12" guitar loudspeaker and had fantastic results. however, I tried plugging it in via a guitar cable to a fender 12" cabinet and got almost no sound from it. I thought guitar cabs are literally just a speaker in an empty box but are there some kind of electronics in it that would require more power amplification?
I just want to use the the heathkit tube amp to power a Guitar Speaker but don't get what I need to do to make that work.

The first answer is correct. A guitar cable and a speaker cable are not the same thing. They make look the same because both have 1/4 inch phone plugs, but they are different inside.
Another factor to consider is the impedance of the speaker. First off, with a tube amp you will need to match the impedance of the amp and speaker cab. If your amp is 8 ohms, you need an 8 ohm speaker cab. An impedance mismatch could account for power loss. Also if you do play a tube amp with a speaker cab that is an impedance mismatch, you have a high risk of burning out the amp.
A speaker cabinet is just a box with a speaker in it. There will be insulation for acoustic effect. The only wiring will be wires from the speaker to the input jack.
