I want to get a heavy metal tone like metallica so what amp shd i get Line 6 Spider 3 75 watt or Vox VT100?
i should be able to get a clean sound when i lower the guitar volume
i have an ESP MH50 with EMG 81(bridge) and EMG 85 (neck)
The Line 6 will not clean up appreciably if you roll back the volume pot. I've never thought very highly of the Spider series. They can have decent sounds, if you dial them in right, use a decent guitar, and push 'em through the right speakers (vintage 30's, for instance), but I contrast that with a well-made tube amp (my Mesa Boogie Tremoverb, for instance) and it can make a moderately crappy guitar sound good over a wide variety of tone tweaks through quite a few different guitar speakers. That's the difference between good design and crap right there.
I've heard a lot of good things about Vox, so if it's a choice between the two, that's what I would go for.
I would suggest you try playing a Randall, if you can find one in your price range, especially if your price range includes the ones with the modular preamps. Those are sick - fully modular tube preamps. Want a blues sound? Drop in the blues preamp. Want a Metallica sound? Drop in the Kirk Hammet preamp. Seriously. They have it, and they designed it based on his gear.
I'm a big fan of Kustom, if you can find one of those to play on you should definitely give it a shot. The times I've heard it it was dialed into more of a classic rock sound, but it sounded like it had the bawlz to ramp up to something heavier. It was a 65 watt model, which is almost exactly the wattage you want for tubes - low enough to get power tube saturation (which is where that "tube" sound comes from) but enough to give you plenty of volume if you aren't being mic'd.
Saul
